As most new laptop computers no longer have a parallel port, we have changed the interface between instrument and computer to use USB. This has a lot of advantages such as a simpler cabling, automatic detection of instrument type and the possibility to use the instruments with tiny computers, including PDA's. The USB based instruments are also much easier to upgrade with new features, including measurement of superelevation, grade and temperature.

Most of the parallel port based MiniProf instruments can be upgraded to use USB. The process requires that the instrument is shipped to Greenwood Engineering for refitting, changing the body to have space to hold the new electronic circuitry required for the USB connection.
